The problems with current warehouse lighting.
Most warehouses use Metal Halides (white light), High Pressure Sodium (Orange light) and/or fluorescent T-Bay technologies. If you are paying R1.15 per kWh, the metal halide lamp uses nearly R3000 of EXTRA electricity compared to its LED counterpart EVERY year (see table below). This doesn’t take into account new globes, labour and cherry picker usage/rental which would further increase the spend differential.

The business case for switching to LED lighting has never been stronger – here’s why:
- At least 65% energy savings if you switch from a 400W lamp to a 155W LED
- Lower maintenance costs as the lamps are warranted from 3 – 5 years i.e. no costly cherry pickers to replace lamps
- Long rated life of 30000 – 50000 hours with up to a 5 year guarantee
- In cold environments, the lamps will actually last longer than their rated life
- LEDs are a lot more flexible at dimming and switching, which can give you more savings should this be required
- LEDs maintain their lumens(brightness) for much longer than normal lamps so even after 3 – 5 years, you should still have a couple years more of useful light

To put this into perspective, if a typical warehouse uses 400W Metal Halide high bays and they switch to LEDs, these are the types of savings you are looking at.
